Two-Time Derby Champ Is Fourth Mets Player To Reach Milestone

Alonso achieved this milestone in his 710th MLB appearance, becoming the fourth-fastest player in MLB history to reach 200-home runs. Among Mets players, he now ranks fourth in career home runs, joining the elite 200 club alongside Mike Piazza (220), David Wright (242), and Darryl Strawberry (252).

The 29-year-old slugger described this achievement as a “really special moment”, saying that it’s “mind-boggling” to be among the fastest players to reach this milestone. Darryl Strawberry expressed his desire for Alonso to surpass his record and become the Mets’ all-time home run leader. It’s not just Strawberry who praises Alonso from afar. David Wright, another Mets legend, praised Alonso as “one of the premier power hitters in the game.”

Alonso burst onto the major league scene in 2019, winning the Home Run Derby and the NL Rookie of the Year. He became the fifth player in MLB history to achieve three 40-home run seasons within his first five years in the league. Alonso also holds Mets single-season records for home runs (53) and RBI (131) in a season. Alonso is known for his power and has been soaring the Mets all-time RBI rankings. With 512 career RBI, Alonso is 10th all-time in Mets history, trailing Cleon Jones and José Reyes.

At the end of the season, Pete Alonso will become a free agent for the first time in his career. While he acknowledges that having his number retired would be “special,” contract negotiations will likely begin after the season ends.

“Pete’s a really good player. He’s an important part of our organization. We’re excited to have him here. Certainly, we hope that we can have him here for a while,” Mets president David Stearns said of Alonso.
